Alexis Weissenberg’s spectacular technique and individual way of playing have made a lasting impression on twentieth-century art of piano- playing. Some of his recordings of the Russian repertoire especially have set a benchmark and are often cited as top recommendations. On stage he has a commanding presence, albeit never using theatrical or other non-musical gestures to deliver his message. Born in 1929 in Bulgaria, he studied there and in Jerusalem before going on to study in New York. With these recordings of the 1960s from various broadcast archives he spans a repertoire from Bach over Brahms and Chopin to Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Rachmaninov and Scriabin. The Petrushka Suite included on this DVD deserves special attention: for this famous film two entire weeks of shooting were necessary as well as a special piano conceived and constructed for this occasion just to fit the film director’s ideas. It was worth it, however, as it had a very strong impact on Weissenberg’s career: when Herbert von Karajan saw it in 1965, he immediately invited Weissenberg to play regularly with the Berlin Philharmonic, which consolidated the international career of the pianist. In Schumann’s "Kinderszenen" (Scenes of Childhood) we find the composer remembering fleeting youthful days filtered through his mature nature; beautifully crafted miniatures filled with a melancholy fondness for the grown-up reminisces of our youth. Robert Schumann wrote: "It is impertinent to judge a whole life by a single action; since the moment which threatens to overthrow a system may often be explained and justified."..."With some timidity, I express my opinion of works, with whose forerunners I am unacquainted. I would gladly know somewhat of a composer’s school, his youthful views, his exemplars, ay, even of his actions, the circumstances of his life, — in a word, somewhat of the whole man and artist as he has hitherto proved himself." During the time he composed "Kinderszenen", Schumann Wieck’s opposition caused him much stress--and in the constant affection of the fine woman who held his happiness he discovered much love. "My troubles have been productive of much music," he wrote..."I have never written so thoroughly from the soul as just lately."

Hatikvah (Hebrew: הַתִּקְוָה‎‎, Hatiq’vah, lit. The Hope) is the national anthem of Israel. The anthem was written by Naphtali Herz Imber, a secular Galician Jew from Zolochiv (today in Lviv Oblast), who moved to the Land of Israel in the early 1880s. The text of Hatikvah was written by the Galician Jewish poet Naphtali Herz Imber in Zolochiv in 1878 as a nine-stanza poem named Tikvateynu (lit. "Our Hope"). The melody, from a common European folk tune, La Mantovana, was arranged by Samuel Cohen, an immigrant from Bessarabia.
